The Afterparty (Season 2) Episode 8: Recap and Ending Explained

The Afterparty Season 2 Episode 8 Recap

The Afterparty (Season 2) Episode 8: Matching up greatness is always a tough thing to do. After delivering the best episode of this season (and possibly the whole series), the makers of The Afterparty had that tough challenge on their hands. But it seems like this show can’t do much wrong in this fantastic season. The latest episode, which primarily focuses on Ken Jeong’s Feng and his poignant tale of love, longing, and struggle, is another glorious example of that. The twist here is this one is told in the style of Instagram/TikTok reel videos, which adds an interesting layer to the whole thing.

The Afterparty (Season 2) Episode 8 Recap:

Following what happened in the last episode, Feng is currently no.1 on the suspect list. But neither Feng nor Vivian seems to have any intention to be interviewed by Aniq and Danner. Instead of forcing the couple, the detective and her apprentice decide to work with whatever they have. Thanks to Zoé, the videographer Kyler is soon tracked down on the internet, and the guy seems to have no problem sharing everything that he shot during the wedding upon hearing there has been a murder. Just when Danner, Aniq, and Zoé are about to go through the videos after showing the door to a displeased Travis, who also wants to participate in the detective work, Vivian asks Zoé to come with her as she has something very important to share. While Zoé says she is about to watch the videos, Aniq insists that she should go with her mother. Meanwhile, Feng decides to accompany Aniq and Danner in the video-watching process and also tells them that whatever they’re going to see him doing has one explanation – Feng was doing it for his family.

What Was Feng’s Deal?

After getting through what we already know through the eyes of Kyler, which includes adding an explosion filter to Aniq’s car accidentally hitting Feng’s truck, we have our first bit of doubt when we find out that Feng is in monetary trouble with his shaved ice cream business. However, Feng assures Danner and Aniq that every small business faces monetary trouble, and this is not a matter of concern. It is soon revealed that Feng plans to convince Edgar to invest in his business, and his way to Edgar’s heart is a shaved ice dessert which he has named “Baobing.” The dessert is something he had with Vivian in Taiwan, and that is where he got the business idea. Unfortunately, though, Feng’s financial trouble doesn’t seem to be as small as he says. In another video, Feng’s truck gets towed because of a permit-related issue, and he obviously can’t pay the money. It is the same moment when Ulysses appears on the scene.

Feng explains he didn’t leave the rehearsal dinner because he saw the brother who betrayed him. It was actually the truck emergency. However, he does manage to take the important things he needs to cater the wedding and puts those in the fridge. Vivian witnesses that and asks if things are alright. She also asks Feng if he is bothered about the return of Ulysses. In a genuinely poignant scene where Ken Jeong hits it out of the park, Feng tells his wife that if it makes Grace happy, that he has no issues with it, and he also tells her he loves her so much, and you can spot the earnestness in the man’s eyes. Feng’s first attempt at convincing Edgar to invest gets ruined as Edgar doesn’t show much interest in his business and to make things worse, Ulysses suddenly appears with a musical instrument made by him only and enthralls Edgar. A disheartened Feng retreats but still doesn’t give up.

An Affair To Remember

The Afterparty Season 2 Episode 8 Recap
A still from The Afterparty Season 2 Episode 8

After hearing about the affair from Ulysses, Aniq suggests to Vivian that she should come clean to Zoé. Following the suggestion, Vivian confesses to both Zoé and Grace that she had an affair with their uncle a long time ago. Zoé and Grace are obviously surprised, especially Grace, who wonders if it is incest in any way. However, Vivian manages to convince her daughters that it is just thrill-seeking and her real love has always been their father, Feng. Soon after, an emotional moment follows where Zoé realizes that the kind of relationship her parents have mirrors exactly what she has with Aniq. An overwhelmed Grace then says to her mother and sister that she is in love with Hannah.

The Afterparty (Season 2) Episode 8 Ending Explained:

Is Isabel A Suspect?

While we all are invested in Feng’s story, in one of the videos we see Isabel telling Edgar that she is onto Edgar’s games and he is not getting away with whatever he has done. Edgar ignores her as nothing has ever happened though. Coming back to Feng’s story, his “Baobing” becomes a hit at the wedding party, but his son-in-law doesn’t try it once and keeps insisting on having cake only. A desperate Feng makes one final attempt to serve Edgar Baobing at the after-party. This time he manages to succeed but sadly, Edgar doesn’t like “Baobing,” and to make things worse for Feng, Roxana hates it, which ensures that Edgar is not going to invest in Feng’s business. Feng gives up on pursuing Edgar and retreats. The next morning, he wakes up to Grace’s screaming and rushes to the scene. While it is true that because Grace did not sign a prenup, she would effectively inherit everything following Edgar’s death and which might solve Feng’s financial problem yet the reaction of Feng after hearing the news of Edgar’s death as seen in Kyler’s video indicates that Feng is genuinely shocked.

With Feng privately telling Aniq that his entire business is an attempt to prove himself to his beloved wife, we can rule out Feng being a murderer as of now. This is a just man (played by a fantastic Ken Jeong) who just loves his wife so much and would do anything to make her happy. Coming back to Isabel, in what should be considered the strangest scene of the episode, Isabel asks Aniq if he wants the big tin-man figurine that stands tall right outside Edgar’s room. Aniq says that Edgar has just died, which Isabel ignores and walks away. However, when Aniq and Danner make their move after seeing Kyler’s video, Isabel announces that she knows who the killer is, and it is definitely not Grace. We are hoping to find out more about that in the next episode.

Wild Killer Prediction:

All Sebastian does in this episode is try Baobing, hating it, then retrying and loving it. While most of the people have somehow managed to prove their innocence through their versions of the story, Sebastian hasn’t managed to do that. It’s between either Sebastian or our next suspect, Isabel, as of now.
