Irish Film and TV Awards 2023: Paul Mescal, Bad Sisters & The Banshees of Inisherin Take Home the Top Prizes

Irish Film and TV Awards 2023

Irish Film and TV Awards 2023: IFTAs (Irish Film and TV Awards) is an annual celebration of excellence in Irish film and television. The award ceremony recognizes & honors the filmmakers, actors, writers, directors, and other creative professionals working in the industry for their outstanding achievements. This year, many IFTA winners happen to be the names snubbed by the Oscars.

The Banshees of Inisherin, which was nominated for 9 Academy awards, went home with none. While the Oscars had multiple Irish nominees (which also became a part of Jimmy Kimmel’s comedy relief), only ‘An Irish Goodbye’ received the trophy for Best Short Film.

The IFTAs rectified those mistakes by honoring Martin McDonagh’s excellent film with three awards, with Kerry Condon & Brendan Gleeson winning for their supporting acting turns and winning the coveted award for Best Film.

Aftersun star Paul Mescal, whose Oscar nomination emerged as an absolutely pleasant surprise, deservedly won his first IFTA award as best actor for Charlotte Wells’ charming debut film. Besides him, Austin Butler (Elvis) and Cate Blanchett (Tár) also won the best international Actor and Actress awards, respectively, despite being snubbed by the American equivalent.

On the side of excellence from TV, Sharon Horgan’s Apple TV+ dark comedy series – Bad Sisters won big. Their outstanding show took home the trophies for best drama, best actress for Horgan, best supporting actress for Ann Marie Duff, and best director for Dearbhla Walsh. The Netflix dramedy series – Derry Girls also received an award for Best Screenplay. Here’s the complete list of 2023 IFTA winners:

Obsessed, fascinated, and always nerding out about cinema! You can find me in the corner of a room ruminating over the last TV series I watched.
