2023 Tony Awards Winners List: Kimberly Akimbo, Leopoldstadt, Topdog/Underdog, Parade Win Top Prizes

Jodie Comer Tony 2023

Sunday evening saw the 2023 Tony Awards ceremony.

Ariana DeBose, an Oscar winner and Tony nominee, returned to emcee the event, which this year was held at the United Palace in Washington Heights, New York City. View the arrivals on the red carpet.

The ceremony was split into two parts, with the preshow, The Tony Awards: Act One, showing live on Paramount Global’s FAST platform, Pluto TV. In addition to airing on CBS, the main ceremony was broadcast live and on-demand on Paramount+.

The ceremony this year took place in the midst of the ongoing writers’ strike after organizers and the WGA reached an agreement for the event to go on without a screenplay in exchange for the guild’s promise not to picket it. DeBose opened a binder marked “76th Annual Tony Awards Script” for the main show, but all the pages were blank, giving a hint to the strike. In the unscripted monologue, DeBose also addressed the strike, remarking that the teleprompters were blank and would remain so as long as they didn’t signal when the winners should finish their remarks.

Leopoldstadt earned the award for best play, Kimberly Akimbo for best musical, Topdog/Underdog by Suzan-Lori Parks for best play revival, and Parade for best musical revival.

While openly nonbinary actor J. Harrison Ghee made history (together with Alex Newell) by winning the best performance by an Actor in a Musical for Some Like It Hot, Jodie Comer won the best performance by an Actress in a Play for Prima Facie. Victoria Clark won best actress in a Musical for Kimberly Akimbo, while Sean Hayes got best actor in a Play for Good Night, Oscar.

A cinephile with immense love for words and everything art. I have an inclination toward understanding human psychology but I prefer dogs over humans any day. I have an affinity for all kinds of music, except techno. Kind of an old soul, trying to tolerate today's typical "Gen Z mindset".
