In 2022, Aubrey Plaza captivated audiences with her performance in the crime thriller “Emily, the Criminal,” while more recently this year, Noah Schnapp, best known for his role in “Stranger Things,” appeared in the mystery thriller “The Tutor” from Vertical. “The Good Mother,” a highly-anticipated crime thriller that dives into a mother’s dogged search for answers, is now on its way to being released. Vertical acquired distribution rights to The Good Mother in June 2023, demonstrating its faith in the film’s potential. The Good Mother features an all-star cast that promises to enrich the storytelling experience. Hilary Swank, best known for her portrayal in “Million Dollar Baby,” plays Marissa Bennings, a tenacious journalist and a struggling mother. Olivia Cooke, well known for her role as Alicent Hightower in “House of the Dragon,” joins her. Jack Reynor, best known for performing in “Midsommar,” plays Marissa’s police officer son. Hopper Penn of “Between Worlds” plays Michael, Marissa’s departed son, with nuance. Norm Lewis rounds out the cast from “Sex and the City 2,” Karen Aldridge from “Severance,” and Dilone from “The Novice.” Their combined expertise promises an enthralling portrayal of the diverse individuals woven into the fabric of this engrossing story.

Plot:

The Good Mother takes viewers to the world of Marissa Bennings, a competent journalist set against the backdrop of upstate New York. The story takes place in the aftermath of the sad murder of Marissa’s estranged son, Michael. The shadows of drugs and criminality surrounding Michael’s life made Marissa assume that his death was not an accident.

Marissa joins Michael’s pregnant girlfriend, Paige, on a dangerous journey. Together, with the reluctant assistance of Marissa’s police officer son, they dig into the maze of mysteries surrounding the young man’s death. As they peel back the layers of deception, a terrifying world of danger and corruption emerges. Surprisingly, the mystery deepens, showing that Michael’s death is only a peep into the city’s underbelly.
